The time before web 2.0 word was coined got web pages in the Internet which were less powerful then what we have today ‘The Internet Web Application‘. Some of the changes that we can see transparently in web application today are in the side of usability and design. The most generalization of web 2.0 concept was making the web writable and shareable. Before Information was solely published by the web site owner and most of the users only interact with the information, though still some sites provided users to write reviews, there was not any model like collaborative, sharing and community that has been more popular these days.

Those are still the old days, many extensions from writable web has been popular now with not only ability to share content but to present ourselves to the internet virtual world with our belongings and identity or more specifically we are now part of the internet social media. All they pose the characteristics that many talks about what web 2.0 platform should have? Still the next stage of web becomes controversial.

Different People consider the next era of web application by buzzword’s like web 3.0…or semantic web etc. Some of the areas we saw changes while leaping to web 2.0 eras were

1. Technology used to deliver the final result- XMLHTTP

2. The depth of Information provided to users- MASHUPS

3. The way users use the application- SOCIAL MEDIA

4. The Business or revenue model -USER GENERATED CONTENT/ Ad/ Subscription

Another area that may be considered for the next stage in delivering the final application to the users can be:

1. Information Organization in WWW- SEMANTIC TECHNOLOGY

2. The Browser Technology- W3C STANDARD, WEB APPLICATION INTEGERATION (flock)

3. Enhancement of communication technology- BANDWIDTH, HARDWARE ACCELETOR

4. Results from the web search- SEMANTIC INDEXING, NLP

5. Business Model (Always there)- SEMANTIC ADVERTISING..

Though new concepts and technology may be implemented in the next era web application, it will not be all that new; they will still inherit characteristics from web 2.0 model with some or all of the above mentioned features included.

Social media differs from the traditional media with it unique feature of ‘openness’. Media of the old times are mostly one way sharing of information. Broadcasting television video or audio are not that interactive as the online media we have today. Social media is particularly interactive sharing of information in words, pictures, videos and audio.

The below listed are some important characteristic of social media:

Involvement- the wall between media and the audiences is transparent

Openness- no password protected content, everyone is able to give feedback

Discussion- social media is two way sharing thus interactive

Community- encourage grouping people of common interest

Connectedness- relations (for e.g. Worked together) connects people making a social graph

Today’s search such as Google, Yahoo and Live outputs well unless there is no conflict information in the documents in WWW and queries. For example a searcher inputs the query ‘bank interest charge‘ to the search engines hoping to get results that will give information about the bank interest charges or some results related to financial banking. Many search engines outputs the result on the basis of partial match or full match, thus also output results like ‘Police in riot gear charged the lines of demonstrators‘ or ‘many people have interest to roam around bank of river‘, which are completely irrelevant to the user’s query. Another aspect is that user may be not complete in describing his information needs, for example users may input their query ‘flower plants‘ but in traditional search the result would not be so intelligent that it will out put all information about flower. For instance the document that contains ‘rose‘ or ‘lily‘, which are indeed flowers, may not be presented to the user.

So what after next 10 years when semantic web becomes possible? We will be getting broad information excluding irrelevant results when searching inside semantic web. Every prune information will be excluded from the results providing most useful and close information that relates to the users query.

Yammer- Yet Another Twitter, Start Yammering today

Yammer is a tool for making companies and organizations more productive through the exchange of short frequent answers to one simple question: “What are you working on?” Just like in Twitter we can follow others, discuss matters etc. with Yammer.

Yammer is yet another Twitter. It gives Twitter messaging system within companies or say it is a private Twitter only for employees of a specific company. In my view this is just another web 2.0 model backing off the old style forum based discussion used within a company. For the administrative control over the people discussion, companies have to pay for yammer but it is still free to large group of employees.

It just takes your private company email to start Yammering. Why not give a try?

With the popularity of social network, India has already taken pace towards social shopping too. A Banglore based company has a new product named Storrz which was announced in an indian conference proto.in. They already got 6500+ product within over 130 categories from India only. I think there is no plan to go global right now. Storrz seems to have a lot of Web 2.0 stuffs, for usability and interface it has no question so far. With AJAX search & navigation, users are pushed to web 2.0 social shopping experience.

Still Storrz has no competitors in India. Other similar sites are CrowdStrom, Yelp and Kaboodle Which covers global market.

Imagining a big launch with comic is certainly surprising. Google has just announced the launch of it’s new chrome browser with new interface and ground breaking benchmark of JavaScript performance. Browser components are not that new except the JavaScript engine V8 which is claimed to be fastest among others will give users to experience more interactive & speed specifically on AJAX applications.

While AJAX application being popular in web 2.0 era, we certainly can guess it will share major browser market soon. Users are using IE, FireFox, Safari with percentage of their markets being 75, 20 & 5 respectively. Chrome browser may overtake some percentage of the IE, Firefox & Safari market.

Developer should thank Google for using the WebKit, an open source rendering engine which avoids them to learn new engine and try to fix error on the existing sites.

Visual communication speeds the recognition of the interfaces…Similarly when we see a home like shape we already got idea it takes us to the home page..

We have been around this since the beginning or say web 1.0, do we still want to see the same old stuffs for visually triggering our mind for recognition ? aren’t we now web 2.0. Take a example of lenses on search , why lenses became popular media to give user sensation that it represents search, in the real world too we see objects with lenses that we cannot see with our eyes. This properties lets the use of lenses for search or to find things hidden…

We have heard and knew that Eagles see objects from very high altitude too. They also behave like lenses. Why don’t we use a eagle eye as a search visualizing interface.
